The list of roguelikes is taken from RogueBasin via
IRLDb. Unfortunately many of the newer roguelikes
(even popular ones) are not there -- please add them to RogueBasin!
We have manually added games, but still.
999 posts and 18579 comments from Jul 6, 2016 to Mar 11, 2017 have been downloaded via the Reddit API.
For each Reddit user and each game the number of posts/comments where the given
user has mentioned the given game is counted. (results)
We try to make sure that we count the game when it is mentioned and we don't count
it if it is not (e.g. Expedition is not counted when someone says that Curious
Expedition is a game about an expedition), but probably there are still some errors.
If a user U mentions game A nA times and game B nB times,
the games A and B attract themselves with force nAnB/fU,
where fU is chosen so that the total contribution of user U is proportional
to the square root of their total number of mentions.
The algorithm optimizes the sum of dAB aAB over all pairs
of roguelikes, where dAB is the distance and aAB is the total
The visualization includes even games which are definitely not roguelike
(we think that their placement is interesting too). To be marked
as a roguelike, the game needs to be fully turn-based, otherwise it is marked as a
roguelite. Turn-based games with roguelike elements are usually unmarked.
The visualization can be zoomed (e.g. Ctrl+numpad plus or Ctrl+mousewheel up in Firefox).
This is done by a fork of HyperRogue named RogueViz. Hyperbolic geometry is used
to give a decent amount of space for each roguelike.
